Do You Know How Much Water You Use?

by: Theresa Lindberg, GPRW Secretary

I did not realize how much water I used every day. From splashing water on my face in the morning to putting in a cycle of laundry at night, I had counted myself seeking out a water source at least 37 times yesterday. I was appalled. Then, I thought does the average American know how often we use and take water for granted every day? I would guess not.

From my experience working with Global Partners Running Water, I have been privileged to learn how the Guatemalan people view water. Our most recent water project, the village of Lemoa, decorated their waterspouts with flowers and ribbons. Before the implementation of the water projects, to replicate my actions, the villagers of Lemoa would have to travel many kilometers to their water source for the day!

As human beings, what unites us are our values. We believe that all are equal, that everyone should have access to a safe place to live, clean water and food, and have the ability to improve their quality of life. As a community, we should take our words to heart. If we are all equal, can we really let our brothers and sisters go without water any longer?  The indigenous people of Guatemala are abandoned by their government, and it is our moral duty to help.

Sometime in the next week, I encourage you to count the number of times you seek out water in a day. I think you will be surprised just how much you use in a day. Would you be capable of traveling ten miles to retrieve that water for as many times as you use it?
